EXERCISE: WE WORK WITH EXPERTS

Dumbell

Some of them regard us as their saviour to the ones whose effects are fast, we are like God sent. Even though, we are not angels but humans and what we do is to help people stay healthy and in shape.
Huge, fat and big tummy people working tirelessly on the weight plate and the abdominal bench, some with head set, sweating profusely and wiping at it with their hand towels.
Men with skinny biceps and triceps, and those with huge body physique working continuously on the chin up and hyper extension bench with hope of getting a bulging one.
“Most customers come because they have tummy fat or weigh excess, why for some they want bulging muscles” Kayode Adelani, 26, Gym instructor.
Kayode Adelani a graduate of Physical Health Education in the University of Lagos has been working at Lotus Fitness and Head about five years ago, while the Gyming centre was established in 2009.
“Two years ago when I got here, I looked like a potato sack; I weigh 99kg for the love of God! But now I weigh 60kg” Mrs Akpan.
Oladipupo Micheal a health practitioner from St Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island said physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. Frequent and regular exercise boosts the immune system and helps prevent heart diseases, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
Lotus Fitness and Health Gyming centre which is located at festival road, Victoria Island Lagos, offers services like personal training, gym classes, aerobics, cardio and more to customer.
“We do not just employ anyone as a gym instructors, they must have done a course like Physical Health Education in school or go through our intense one year training” Mrs Adeniyi Juliet, Manager Lotus Fitness and Health.

Exercise Bench

Most Nigerians still regard Exercise as a total waste of time or to some it is even jumping around, majority do not patronize gyming centres like they do other places.
A passer-by Muhammad Kareem said he does not even understand what they do in the place, he just keep seeing people moving around and controlling machines.
People who know the importance of exercise go as far as having their own gyming equipment’s at home.
“Some customers demand for home service which we offer, they just pay more than if it is here at the centre” Kayode.
Being a gym instructor is not an easy work, some customers do not follow instructions which mostly lead to them not seeing results like they would like.
We’ve had a customer who came here crying and said her husband does not like her again because of her fat; she kept crying and saying we should help her, said Mrs Adeniyi.
The equipment’s we have at the gyming centre are the Multi position Bench, Seated Calf Machine, Inner Thigh Machine Jg-1809, Barbell, Dumbbells and Weight Plates, Ez Curl bar, Tricep bar, Flat bench, Hyper Extension Bench, Abdominal Bench, Swiss ball, Weight tree and the Chin up or dipping bars.
“The frequently used equipment’s are the abdominal bench for abdominal exercise, the hyper extension bench for working the lower back, hamstring and Glute muscles, chin ups for working the back, biceps and forearms” said Kayode.
Annually the Gyming centre creates awareness to people by organizing seminars where customers and the general public are educated on the importance of exercise by health experts and educate them on how to stay healthy all the time.
“Coming to Lotus Gyming Centre feels like home as most of their instructors are very friendly and helpful” Emeka Igwe.
The centre has different working schedules for customers depending on when you are available. The centre offers service even during the weekends for people who cannot make it during the week days.
“We also have athletes and models that come to work out at times and that is when we use other equipment’s like the tricep bar for working the muscles from different angles, the Ez Curl for working the biceps and triceps among others” Fashino Ayo, another instructor.
Kayode Adelani who grew up on the Island said he wanted to help the people there concerning their health.
“During my university days, people who hear about the course I was studying will say it is a total waste of four years” said Kayode.
Gyming instructors might not get well paid like other professionals in other fields but the satisfaction comes from knowing you were able to help another.
“The best part of this job is knowing I was able to help someone” Kayode
